Our gift guide is a curated showcase for the remarkable projects and products being made by Happy Family contributors and beyond: a selection of food, art, and experiences for you, your loved ones, and pretty much all discerning shoppers out there. Asian Diaspora Heritage month might be over, but our commitment to supporting talented makers is year-round!
Why are we launching a gift guide? At Happy Family, our mission is to celebrate the Asian diaspora and support our vibrant community, especially emerging artists, chefs, and entrepreneurs. Our gift guide is a platform to tell their stories, champion their creativity, and amplify voices that are underrepresented in our community.
Plus, like you, we love a thoughtful gift! So we reached out to some very accomplished folks to find new sources of sparkle, spice, and umami. We have fruit to grace your ears, heat to punch up your palate, and skills to expand your cooking repertoire. There are shirts with strong reminders and totes that pass on the generosity, supporting the next generation of artists.
We hope you enjoy this edition, the first of many to come!

FAR–NEAR is an artist-run cross-cultural book series, printed annually, that broadens perspectives of Asia through image, person, idea and history to unlearn the inherent dominative mode. The Asian continent and its people have often been expressed through the lens of a foreign eye and painted as “the other” to a Western audience. Extending beyond the Far East, FAR–NEAR features voices from Japan to Iran and just about everywhere in between.
This edition of our annual printed book is themed around Guidance, and aims to recover the past, document the present as it stands, and try to make sense of the future. We speak to artists like Vietnamese American filmmaker, writer, literary theorist, composer, and professor Trinh T. Minh-Ha; Hong Kong photographer and former fashion editor of Amoeba Magazine Kary Kwok; photographers Leslie Shang, Ibrahem Hasan, Vince Aung, Hu Yang, Tirtha Lawati, Brendan George Ko; and more.
Profits from this tote support Sirkhane DARKROOM, a non-profit mobile darkroom which travels along the Syrian-Turkish border to teach children how to shoot, develop, and print their own photographs. Designed by Raiheth Rawla and crafted in India, each bag features photographs and illustrations by the project’s young participants. All totes have a tie closure and inside pocket to store small items.
